RungePincockMinarco’s (RPM) Principal Process Engineer, Dr. John Uhrie, was presented with the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division’s “Millman of the Year” Award at the annual meeting of the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) held in Denver, Colorado last month.

Denver, USA (March 9, 2015)

The Millman award is presented annually to the outgoing Chair of the Division and is the culmination of a seven year process of service. John’s tenure with the division has seen improved division programming, a consistent and thorough awards process, and marked fundraising efforts allowing for significant scholarship opportunities for students.

Commenting on this accolade, Dr. Uhrie said “Serving the Minerals and Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) and being recognised as the “Millman of the Year” has been a very humbling experience for me. I have enjoyed my tenure and I can only hope that those who follow me in this role will find it to be as rewarding as I have.”

Dr. Uhrie, based in Denver, joined RPM after 20 years working with major mining companies such as Phelps Dodge, Freeport McMoRan, and Newmont Mining. He is highly experienced in operations, operations management, project development and engineering, and startups of copper, cobalt and gold projects. John is highly experienced in all aspects of owners’ side project engineering and is a recognised technical expert in sulfide processing of copper, heap bio-leaching, pressure oxidation, and SXEW.  Dr. Uhrie has degrees in geology, geological engineering, and a PhD in metallurgical engineering.  He has authored 14 technical publications and one book, holds two US Patents, is a Registered PE (Mining and Minerals Processing), and is a qualified professional through the MMSA.

RPM’s CEO, Mr. Richard Mathews commented on the achievement “It is great to have someone with John’s wealth of experience as part of our team, his expert knowledge and technical capability adds to the depth and diversity of our advisory business. This award recognises the dedication that John has shown to his field over is stand out career and is a fine example of the level of commitment our team offers to the industry. I congratulate you, John.”

This year’s SME meeting was held against a backdrop of reduced metal prices resulting in challenging times for junior exploration and mining companies.

Dr Uhrie commented “While prices are down resulting in a slowing of the sector, the major miners especially in the copper space continue to push forward on development so they are ready when there is an eventual turnaround. The message in the gold sector is they continue to work on cost containment which will, in turn, allow them to keep projects moving forward.”

RPM’s mining consultants are internationally respected for their depth and breadth of experience and as a result, are the go-to independent advisors for many of the world’s largest mining operators, financial institutions and investors.
